DIY RING LIGHT EFFECT | PHOTOGRAPHY AND BLOG TIPS

DIY Ring Light Effect. If you've never seen a ring light before, they look like this. Their purpose is to create a nice even cast on the subject, getting rid of unnecessary shadows and creating a vignette effect (the faded black ring around photos). As a beauty blogger, these things would be really handy in making our photos much clearer, and makeup will show more vividly as well. Now, a ring light will cost at least $189 (Ebay), with the prices going up to $500, at least that's what I've seen. I debated for hours on the pros and cons of investing in a ring light, and then I realized that I could probably just recreate the effect on my own. Not perfectly, but close enough.

Anyway, I've come up with a rather cheap alternative, and after some experimenting (not that much), I figured out a way to get a similar effect. Hopefully, I can explain this clearly.

WHAT YOU NEED.
2 Floor lamps with extendable/flexible arms.
4 LED Daylight 5000K Light Bulbs, around $13 from Home Depot. More bulbs for more lamps.
1 Tripod

SETUP.

Setup your camera however you want to shoot. I like to position my camera approximately 2-3 feet away and point the camera lens above my head and angle it downwards slightly.
Position the floor lamps on either side of the camera lens. You should align the bulbs with the lens of your camera, and point them the same way. If you have more than 2 flexible arms, you can position them all around the camera for an even more ring light-y effect - top, bottom, left, right, wherever they fit. You really only need two arms though.
Turn off your ceiling light. Ceiling lights cast an ugly shadow and mine are warm light so they make everything yellow.
Turn on the lamps.
Check your camera's white balance and adjust it. Your screen should show the actual color your subject is, not too white, blue or yellow. Refer to your camera's manual to see how to adjust the white balance.
Take some test shots.
You'll see that everything is lit up nicely, and you also get the nice lights in your eyes. Not the full ring, but there's some sparkle there, which is nice.
Add some warm lights to your background for a warming effect.

TEST SHOT - UNEDITED other than watermarking.

With a little brightening on Photoshop, it'll be perfect. For videos, I'm liking it as is. Note that I don't have any other lights on other than the lamps and the string lights.

What do you think of this lighting? How do you light your photos and videos? Also, how do you like my new background? I really like this setup!

MILANI COLOR STATEMENT LIPSTICK IN PLUMROSE

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Plumrose. Yes, that is one word. I had to do a double take when I saw it, but whatever tickles their pickle. I've been loving Milani lately, and not only do many of their products get excellent reviews, their prices are so affordable! I picked up this lipstick for $4.99 at Kmart. 4-freaking-99. I also did a double take when I saw the price, took it to the price scanner and jumped for joy when indeed the price was correct at under $5. We don't pay additional taxes here, so what you see is what you get. Yay!

This gorgeous lipstick is encased in a plastic gold rounded rectangular tube with the color displayed on the bottom, so you can easily see which shade is which given you store your lipsticks upside down. Also on the bottom is the name of the shade. You could also just pop open the tube to take a peek, but ain't nobody got time for that! Yes, I did.

Formula-wise, this lipsticks is impressive. Application was smooth and lasting power was normal at 3-4 hours without eating, and since the shade is a bit darker, it left a nice soft stain behind. It does fade outwards, so you will end up with a lip liner look at the end of the day until that fades away too. So, reapplication is recommended whenever you see fit.

As for the color, I'm in love! It's rosy and plummy at the same time and looks so chic. This is my slow journey towards more plum tones (as many of you have recommended to me), and I did pick up a slightly darker (okay a lot darker) shade, so I'll share that with you soon!

What do you think? Have you tried any Milani Lipsticks? You really should!

BLOGGING BACKGROUND DECOR | BLOGGING TIPS

Blogging background decor. If I had access to an Ikea, believe me, I'd have the same Alex drawers and Malm desks that everyone seems to have. Sadly, I don't have the pleasure of perusing the Ikea aisles with delight. Another store that I'm obsessed with and can't afford - PBTeen. Oh, yes!
Anyway, I make do with what I have access to, and if you notice in my Youtube videos and photos, I change it up every so often. I get bored really quickly, so I move things around. When you're contemplating your photo or video backgrounds, I only have a few tips and tricks.
  • Keep it clean and clutter free.
  • Make sure nothing looks like it's sticking out of your head (ie. lamps, books...).
  • Light it up with something warm (ie. a lit candle, fairy lights, a lamp...), especially if you're taking photos or videos in studio lighting.
  • Make it yours. No one wants the same background as everyone else, so do something special with it.

These shelves came with the condo. Not so pretty, but I put some pretty things to distract the eye. Books, plushes, candles, cute storage, blogging books, an old polaroid camera, and a picture frame with a printout of the word DREAM

Under the lower shelf, I strung up some warm Christmas lights and let the rest lay across my standing book case to light up my photos. I take my photos on the empty white space between my polishes and glass bowl full of new makeup products. I like to use clear storage, because it looks cleaner and showcases products wonderfully.

This glass bowl is filled with new beauty products and samples. Recently, I switched it out for a cute wire Easter basket. If you've seen my Instagram feed (follow me for pretty photos and yummy food!), I shared a photo of the basket I got from the Easter clearance sale. It's ADORABLE!

I store all of my nail polishes in these clear bins. I couldn't find ones without holes, but these do just fine. I have a couple on top of the book case and a few in the cubbies below.

So there you have my decor ideas. What are some of your blogging decor tips and tricks?

SUGAR COOKIES EXTREME | SUGAR COOKIE CUPS WITH BUTTERCREAMCHEESE FROSTING

Sugar Cookies Extreme. To be honest, I couldn't think of what to call these other than my favorite way to have sugar cookies. So I went with extreme. This is my go-to recipe for a fun, pretty, and super easy sugar cookie treat. They are so easy to make and even easier to devour. They're sweet, but not tooth-achingly so, chewy, and oh so good! Perfect for parties or for just sitting in your pj's watching your favorite tv shows all night long. Yep, that's how I do. Anyway, let's get bakin'!

Take your favorite cookie mix (or make it from scratch).

Egg and butter.

Mix until doughy.

Scoop them into muffin tins.

Let cool and make frosting!

I was out of piping bags, so I used a closed star tip and a clear zip bag.

Frosting away...

Sprinkles to add some pizzazzzz!

Yummy scrumptious cookies!

INGREDIENTS
Favorite Sugar Cookie Mix or recipe from scratch
1 Egg
1 Stick Butter, softened (1/2 cup)

FROSTING
1/4 Cup Butter, softened (1/2 stick)
2 1/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
3 1/2 Tbsp Milk (2%)
1 Tablespoon Cream Cheese
Sprinkles

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Follow instructions on Sugar Cookie Mix for drop cookies (not roll out cookies).
Line muffin tin with cupcake wrappers.
Scoop 1 tbsp of dough into each cup.
Pop into oven and bake for 12-14 minutes or until sides have begun to brown. Don't overbake or you will have crunchy cookie cups.
Remove from oven and let cool in pan or on a cooling rack.
Prepare the frosting.
In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, butter, and milk.
Using a hand mixer, cream until smooth.
Add in cream cheese and cream until smooth and shiny.
Place in piping bag or clear zip bag with any icing tip.
When cookie cups are cool, frost away!
Add sprinkles for fun!
Eat and enjoy!

Happy Easter, everyone!

NYX POWDER BLUSH IN SILKY ROSE REVIEW & SWATCHES

NYX Powder Blush in Silky Rose. Within the span of a year, NYX has become one of my favorite brands. They're really churning out the good stuff with their amazing and affordable blushes, bases, liners, and their cult "Butter" products. I have yet to try any of said Butter products, but hold on, I'll get there soon enough. I have a couple of NYX blushes in my collection, and today, I shall share with you, Silky Rose.

The blush is encased in a black plastic rounded square pot with a clear lid, so you can tell what color is in each pot. It isn't very sturdy and feels quite cheap, however that is factored into their price. Shade names are labeled on the back of each product along with ingredients and other information that no one really looks at.

NYX powder blushes go on effortlessly sheer but can be built up to your liking. It lasts for hours, and as is standard, the powder is 'embossed' with a 3-D quilted pattern. Silky Rose is a beautiful shimmer-free medium dusty rose that's not too pink nor too brown. It'll suit just about anyone. The powder is soft to the touch yet doesn't kick up when I swirl my brush around. I only need to swirl a couple of times, because it is very pigmented. Tap off the excess and with a light hand, apply onto cheeks with my favorite brush. My brush of choice is the Real Techniques Contour Brush. It picks up just enough product and blends it seamlessly onto my skin.

If you like a good budget blush with excellent pigmentation and a great range of shades (27 shades), you might want to check these out. At $5 a pop on NYX's website, you really can't go wrong!

Do you have any NYX blushes? What are your favorite shades?

ESTEE LAUDER AND CLINIQUE MINI HAUL

Estee Lauder and Clinique Mini Haul. Time for more beauty products! Macy's was having a deal - if you spent $35 on Estee Lauder products, you get a gift bag with goodies for free. Of course, being the huge Estee Lauder fan that I am, I couldn't stop myself.

What I purchased:
Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer in Very Light
Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Waterproof Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara in Black Clinique Cheek Pop/Blush Pop in Plum Pop (that's a lot of pop in that name)

Free goodies:
Lilly Pulitzer for Estee Lauder Makeup Bag - cute floral print with gold trim
Estee Lauder Take It Away Makeup Remover Lotion (sample 1 oz.)
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair (sample 0.24 oz)
Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Firming/Sculpting Face and Neck Cream (sample 0.5 oz)
Estee Lauder Pure Color Long-lasting Lipstick in Pink Parfait Shimmer (sample)
Estee Lauder Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara in Black (sample 0.10 oz)
Lilly Pulitzer for Estee Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow Palette (sample)

The Lilly Pulitzer makeup bag is super cute, made of floral canvas with gold binding and zipper. The zipper pull is a sturdy pink plastic tag embossed with the Estee Lauder name. I love that it's pink, green, and gold and that it feels sturdy. It'll definitely stay with me for a while.

Currently, there is a Clinique deal going on at Macy's, and I may or may not have "participated" in that deal also...

Did you take advantage of the Estee Lauder deals? Would you like me to review anything in particular from this haul? Let me know! :)

HOW TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS | BLOGGING TIPS

How to get more followers. Let's face it, numbers do matter. Not follower count - view count. Numbers show how your blog is progressing and how your audience is responding to it. You can tell when a blogger worked really hard to get to where they are. If our numbers are stagnant, it's always helpful to take a step back and analyze our blog to see what we can do to improve. I'm not a professional of any sort, but I do try to pay attention, so I want to share some of what I've learned in the past year that I've been blogging. FYI, I don't mean to sound rude in any of the points - I'm just a bit expressive, lol! So here we go.

DO!
1. Blog design matters, but it should be unique to you. This is the first thing people see, so let your personality shine through.
2. Comment on other blogs and respond to comments on your posts. Communicate with the community. Make friends!
3. Quality content is important. Don't just throw something together. Take your time and add nice photos (bright, large, focal) to break up large chunks of text. Also, spellcheck and grammar check. Your and you're, definitely and defiantly, macaron and macaroon - use the proper one.
4. Social media involvement. Twitter - yes! Instgram - sure. Facebook - maybe. I hear tons of complaints about Facebook, so I personally don't bother with it. Twitter is a great way to network. Join chats like #bbloggers or #fblchat. If you're a lifestyle blogger, there's #lbloggers chat too. Most importantly, talk to your followers and the people you're following. Make your existence known, help each other out, answer questions, and be kind. Always be kind.
5. Ignore the rude comments but take into consideration the criticism and round out your point of view. Give yourself room to grow.
6. Give it time. Great blogs weren't born in a day or 30. It takes a while, so just breathe and enjoy the ride!

DON'T! These should go without saying, but I'll say them anyway...
1. Ask for S4S, follow for follow, etc. Don't do that. It's annoying, and you'll most likely be ignored or worse - blocked.
2. Follow people and then unfollow when they follow you back. Firstly, that's incredibly rude. Secondly, they can see you do it.
3. Spam your links on comment sections. Again, this will get you blocked. If you're going to comment, make it a kind, quality comment that relates to the post and then leave your link after your comment. Otherwise, don't.
4. Gossip and trash talk. I don't even need to explain how unnecessary and rude it is.
5. Copying other bloggers. Yes, we blog about the same things a lot of the time, but make it your own - don't rip off someone else's hard work. And don't steal photos!

What are some of your tips for growing your following?
