The Highlighter Queen: Mary-Lou Manizer

I've never owned a proper highlighter before, because I just never thought I needed one. I still don't need one, but the glowing effect you get from a good highlighter can be really gorgeous if done properly.

Introducing theBalm's Mary-Lou Manizer

I received this as a special surprise birthday gift from a good friend - thebeautiverse - in the mail, and I had no idea what it was. When I opened the package, I literally was in shock - no joke. I had wanted to buy this product for ages, but I wanted to wait it out. It's a good thing I did, because then I would have two! But who's going to complain about that?

What is it?
Mary-Lou Manizer is an ultra smooth, soft, and extremely pigmented highlighter, shimmer, and eyeshadow in a silver plastic compact. It comes with a large mirror so that you can see exactly where you're applying the product. Be careful, though, because it's really soft. I don't recommend throwing it in your handbag. It's best sitting pretty on your vanity. theBalm also prides itself on its talc-free, cruelty-free, and paraben-free products, so if that's important to you, have no fear. ;)

How to use it?
This is a multi-purpose product with a beautiful shimmery golden champagne color (great for everyone!). You can use it as an eyeshadow all over your lid or to highlight the inner corners and under the brows. Sweep it on your cheeks for that glowing goddess look. You can also use it all over your face for an all over glowy finish (but use sparingly!). You don't want to look like a disco ball.

Just one VERY light swipe of the product. CRAZY!

Where to buy?
Wherever you can get theBalm products. I would suggest Amazon ($17-24), theBalm ($24), and Feel Unique (£15) who also have free delivery worldwide.

Do you have this product? What do you think? What are some of your favorite highlighters?

Get to Know Me Better: Questions from Steph at Fun Size Beauty

Tag, I'm it!
I haven't done a tag in a while, and since Steph from Fun Size Beauty tagged me, I feel I must oblige, since she's so cute and sweet. Check her out!

Rule 1: Post the rules.
Rule 2: Answer the questions the tagger asked you, then make 11 (or how many you want) new ones.
Rule 3: Tag 11 people [ or how many you feel like ] and link them to your post.
Rule 4: Let them know you've tagged them.

The Questions!

1. How many glasses of water do you drink a day?
Ummm... I drink maybe 4 glasses of water and 2 cups of tea. I know. BAD!

2. KFC or Popeyes?

Neither. I don't eat fast food. I've been fast food sober for 5 months now! High five!

3. If you had a limitless amount of cash but could only purchase one thing, what would you buy?

Oh gosh. I'd probably buy some sort of food, maybe bread, haha.

4. Who is your all time favorite blogger and why?

Honestly, this changes quite a bit for me, so I guess I don't really have a favorite of all time. I have some that I admire, but I always find new bloggers that I love and admire. I can't choose!

5. Do you like tag posts?

I do, sometimes. It gets to be a little much when people do it all the time, but once in a while is fun.

6. Your favorite childhood memory.

I remember always building forts out of bed sheets with my little brothers. We'd play all day without a care in the world.

7. What are your interests other than makeup/fashion/beauty?

I enjoy reading and writing and laying around doing absolutely nothing. Sleeping has become an enjoyable experience, and I love taking pictures of food and then eating it. I like to make jewelry too.

8. Name 3 summer beauty essentials...GO!

Lol! SPF 50 or higher. Tinted lip balm. Face powder.

I TAG:

Erica at Diary of a Trendaholic
Kallie and But first, coffee
Lily at Cosmetically Creative
Stacey at Expat Make-Up Addict
Yuen at The Craziest Paradigm

Questions:

1. First makeup product. Ever.
2. What's your beauty secret?
3. Eyeliner or Mascara?
4. If you had a choose a song to describe yourself, which song would you choose? Why?
5. Favorite nail polish at the moment?
6. Would you rather wear winter clothes in the summer or summer clothes in the winter?
7. Would you rather look like a boy or sound like a boy?

Ok, I'm done, lol. I can't think of anything else. Feel free to do this tag even if I haven't tagged you!

  • ½ avocado
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt

Pimples Be Gone

Ok, getting over the horrid Walmart experience, I bring you some good stuff!

You know how they say that only teens have pimples/acne. Well, that's completely false. Adults get acne too, sometimes even if they've never had a spot in their entire life. I've had pimples since I was 10 years old, because I hit puberty pretty early, and that's also probably why I'm so short with baby feet. Back then, to remedy my pimple situation, I would just pop them or douse them in some solution that contained way too much alcohol. If you know what Eskinol is, give me a high five in the comments!

Anyway, now that I'm older and learning more about what's good for my skin and what's not going to work, I ditched the Eskinol and have turned to products that contain benzoyl peroxide (BP). BP is said to increase cell turnover, clean out pores, and reduce bacteria count within the pores. In other words, it's supposed to kill the life out of that zit, since spots, zits, pimples, and acne, feed off of bacteria (gross). I've learned that salicylic acid products don't work for me, so I only get products with BP in them. So far, so good. My holy grail pimple zapper is:

Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment

It comes in a little tube that measures 2.5 x 1.5 inches (not including the cap). It's filled with product, so it will last a really long time. There is 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, so I assume that's a good enough amount for my type of spots. Some may need more or less.

You just squeeze a little bit of product out of the spout, but be sure to clean up any residue, because it will build up and get crusty...

This is what the formula looks like. It's not too thick and not too thin. It's slowly running down due to the force of gravity, but it's not at all runny or gloopy. There is a slight scent, but it's nothing I would complain about. You only need enough to cover the spot and massage it in. After washing my face, I like to dab it onto my spots, massage it in and then add a little more on top, patting down like I would concealer. I follow up with my moisturizer after to hydrate my skin. I do this when I feel the tingling sensation that is a spot announcing itself, getting ready to break through the skin or even when the spot has fully emerged. By the next day, my spot is dried up and receding. The skin around it is not dry, so I'm happy for that as many products dry out the surrounding skin along with the spot. This costs around $7-9 at my local Kmart, so check around your drugstores.

I have to say that it probably won't work on cystic acne, because I think that's a completely different type of acne that may need hydrocortisone instead. Ask your dermatologist if you can.

*I am not a skin expert, I am only a me expert. What works for me may not work for you, so don't take my word as gold. I do however, enjoy your company on my blog :).

What products work best for when you have a spot? Any holy grails you'd like to share with me? I'd love it if you would! :)

Death of a Lipstick and Walmart Online Store Review

I said in a previous post that I'll be writing a review on my shopping experience on the Walmart website. Just thinking about it is already making my blood boil... so, I do apologize in advance if I display a bit of anger towards the place. Grrrr!

My latest purchases were at Walmart online, and I ordered a bunch of things for myself as a birthday treat from my husband :D. I place the order on July 13, and it is now July 28. I have only received 3 of the 20 products I ordered - 2 lipsticks and a blush/bronzer duo. Each of those products came separately, in their own box big enough to hold 1 or 2 DSLR cameras with space to spare. I don't get it. They're SO wasteful!

I probably should have learned the first time I ordered makeup from them, which was a couple of months ago. I ordered the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder, and it came in a huge box as well. The worst part was that the powder wasn't sealed, no wrapper or sticker in sight, AND someone had swatched it. I ordered a return and sent it back. It took about a month to get back to them, and they should have shipped me a new one. I received an e-mail saying they did, but I'm not holding my breath.

Ok, so on to the next beauty product. I ordered Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Lipcolor in Neon Red, and when that arrived, I was SO excited. Again, I got another HUGE box, but whatever. Here's the lipstick.

Well, there you go. I call it Death of a Lipstick. I was crushed! I was so excited only to be devastated a few seconds after. Gaahh!!! I was mad. Hubby was really mad. I've ordered a return for it, and I don't want to deal with the replacement. I just want my refund.

The next product that came in was the Flower Glow Baby Glow Blush/Bronzer Duo that I reviewed here, and that came sealed and in tact, still in a huge box, but it was OK. Phewww!

Next one that came in was a Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Moss in #10. I didn't take a photo of when I first took it out of the box (I should've!), but it came with a piece of masking tape (the beige kind) wrapped around it, holding it closed (-_-). I checked to see if it had been swatched, because I'm used to this by now. It was slightly swatched. You could tell someone had run it on their hand or something. I didn't order a return. I just sprayed alcohol all over the lipstick, hoping not to ruin it, and let it sit for a while and did it again. Then I wiped it off, hoping the germs had died. If they didn't - oh well. I'm just sick of it. I'm not even looking forward to the rest of my package, which is still stuck somewhere in California...

In a nutshell, Walmart online is SO TERRIBLE. It's too early to be this angry, so I'll end this here. Next time, we'll do a happy post! :)

So what do you think of this experience? Have you had anything like this happen to you? I would really love the hear it. :) Thanks for reading as always.

Glow Baby Glow

If you haven't heard of the US cosmetics brand, Flower, it is a line created by Drew Barrymore (the amazing actress/director etc). Everything is manufactured in the US, and it says so on each product label. Read more about Flower here. You can only find the line at US Walmart stores, so I'm sorry international readers :(. If you can find a lovely friend overseas to ship some over to you, then you have awesome friends.
Before you ask, I would love to do that for you, but I don't have a Walmart where I live. I have to order everything to be shipped to me, and it takes FOREVER. I'll do a Walmart Online review soon.

I have 3 products from this line - 1 lip butter (reviewed here), 1 lipstick (post coming soon), and 1 blush/bronzer duo. Today, I'm going to be sharing with you the blush/bronzer duo.

Flower Glow Baby Glow Blush/Bronzer Duo in Sunkissed and Single

What the brand says about this product:
  • Ultra-smooth pressed powder combines superlative wear, comfort, and color purity.
  • Smooth application and supreme blendability.
  • Contour with bronzer and add sheer color with blush.
  • Sheer radiance
  • Oil free

My Top 5 Lipsticks and a Bonus Bright Red

First, I'd like to say that I have several giveaways running at the moment, so if you fancy a chance to win, check the sidebar for the links (easy access) ;).

Ok, on to my top 5 lipsticks, for now. I've been enjoying the effect a good lip product can have on one's entire look, and lately, I've been loving these shades. I threw in a bright red lipstick for fun, because a good red lipstick is equivalent to a little black dress - everyone should have one stowed away for those special days.

I hope you enjoy the video!

Thank you to all of my new followers all around. I am very very humbled that you read my blog. If you haven't subscribed to my Youtube channel, I would greatly appreciate your support over there as well. If you have a channel or blog you want me to check out, link it down below, as I love to support my supporters. That's what this beauty community is about, isn't it?

What do you think of my picks? Do you own any of these? What are your current favorite lip products?

Vintage Style Bronze Owl Necklaces

You all know how I prefer to make my own jewelry, but I saw these and I just couldn't help myself. I first saw the little gem-eyed creatures floating around Instagram, so I went to the shop advertising it, only to find out that the price was $12 per necklace not including shipping. Now, don't think I'm a cheapo. Well, maybe I am - I blame it on my Business Finance and Economics degree. Yup, we were bred to be this way, lol. Being an Etsy/Ebay addict, I can almost guarantee that I can find costume jewelry for dirt cheap prices, because that's honestly how much it costs to make them.  And I was absolutely right.

I've taken photos next to a ruler for size reference. :)

Aren't they adorable!?! I thought they were super cute. I went on a hunt for the gem-eyed owls, but then I saw the big black eyed beauty and had to order one too. I ordered 2 of the gem-eyed ones, because I thought I might give one away to a friend or maybe just keep both. Most likely the latter (read below).

This is the back side of the larger black eyed owl. Each component is connected by sturdy jump rings, and the metal is very solid. It is the only one of the three necklaces that comes with a clasp, and also the only one connected by a bail to the chain. A bail is the fancy thing that connects the pendant to the chain ;).

Here's a close-up of the gem-eyed creatures. Aren't they stunning? I love vintage style necklaces so much, and I've been dying to own some. These are my firsts, and I am very happy. You can see that they don't have a bail. They're simply connected to the chain by a jump ring. My only issue with them is the obvious quality difference, which you can see in the curves, edges, bevels, and the back.

Clearly, one is better made and more sturdy, and you can feel it in the weight of the necklace. The chains are also slightly different. One (the better quality owl) has a slightly thicker chain.
I'm not really sure why they're different, when I ordered from the same vendor and put 2 in the quantity section. It's not TOO big a deal, but it is slightly disappointing. I contacted the vendor about this issue, but they don't speak English well, and couldn't understand what I was trying to say. They offered a refund if I returned the items, but it's not worth the extra time or money. For this reason, I probably won't be giving one away. It's ok, though. I still love them, and they're still gorgeous. Those eyes!

Where to buy: cshop6 on Etsy
Price: $0.99 each for the Crystal Rhinestone Owl Pendant Necklaces
$1.99 for the Owl Pendant Long Necklace
Shipping cost: $5.30
Total cost: $9.27
Arrival time: a month. :/

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. I probably wouldn't buy from this seller again though, mainly because of the difficulty communicating with them.
My advice for shopping on Etsy and Ebay: look around, and look around some more. Enter shops and look around, because as you can see in the shop above, the same necklaces are listed several times with different prices. Even the shipping prices vary.

Do you like my new necklaces? Do you sometimes have a hard time with vendors? What do you do to resolve the issue? Other thoughts?

Barbie Inspired Makeup and Nails

I'm currently on a quest to use some of my brightest eyeshadows in my collection and make them wearable. First up was pink! I was inspired by some Barbie looks, and I thought - why the heck not? So, I made a little Get Ready With Me Video where I show you how I do my face and eye makeup, a cute little mani too!

I look different in this photo... not quite sure why, lol.

DIY: EASY Leather Wrap Charm Bracelets

It's DIY time! I don't remember the last time I did a diy post, so I thought I'd do one tonight. It's a super easy cord-wrap-charm-bracelet type jewelry.

What I used:

I've linked where you can get the supplies, but you can use whatever materials you want to create a similar bracelet. This style is easily changed and customizable. For instance, you can use ribbon instead of cord, and you won't need the end caps - you could just tie it closed. It's totally up to you what you want to do with it. Just make sure your components fit together - a 2mm cord will need a 2mm hole in the end cap.

First way - Charms slide around freely.
I used 2mm leather cord, but you can use whatever you wish - pleather cord, ribbon, string, etc. I wrapped some cord around my wrist a few times for that wrapped look, and then cut through it with scissors. On one end of the cord, I attached one end of the end cap. Next, I attached some charms to jump rings so that they face forward properly instead of just hanging the charm on its own, then I strung them on the black cord. I closed off the other end with the other half of the end cap.

Second way - Charms are knotted into place.
I used to same kind of cord, but in white this time. I attached the end cap just the same and roughly divided the cord into sections by folding in half, creasing, and then folding in half again and creasing. This way, I could roughly eye where I wanted my charms to be. I tied a knot, slid the charm on, and then tied another knot after the charm. I did this 3 times for my 3 charms. Then I closed off the end with the other half of the end cap.

The finished bracelets.

What do you think of them? Would you try making something similar? What do you think of my DIY posts?
